Eliminate potential harmful foods
Very often there is a connection between food and symptoms. Many people have allergies or intolerances to certain foods. Underlying differences between allergies and intolerances are as follows…
Food allergies cause an immediate immune reaction to a specific food that occurs every time the food is eaten, even in small amounts. This is an immune-mediated reaction.
Food Sensitivities and Intolerances are defined as a reaction to a food that can be delayed by several hours or days this may not occur with small exposures and may be cumulative. This may or may not involve the immune system. Examples are lactose intolerance and histamine intolerance. They are not true allergies but will still have a very negative effect on the sufferers quality of life.
Gaining more attention is Non-Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS), where people present with IBS like symptoms which disappear on a gluten-free diet. Other symptoms of NCGS include fatigue, foggy brain, headaches, depression, joint and muscle pain and skin problems.
How Can Nutritional Therapy Help?
Often in my practice, I prescribe an elimination diet for patients that I suspect through a thorough evaluation of medical case history have food sensitivities and intolerances. The elimination diet removes the offending food or food group for a period of 21-25 days, then it is reintroduced to identify triggers. Elimination diets such as FODMAPS, Specific Carbohydrate Diet, low histamine diet derive great benefits to patients suffering unnecessarily with symptoms triggered by problematic foods.
